Background

Welcome
I am a transgender Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) working with trans, queer, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming teens and adults. I have 18 years of experience as a mental health provider, including clinical practice, LGBTQI support group facilitation for teens and adults, crisis counseling, and provider trainings for health professionals on gender diversity.

I have a non-pathologizing approach and deeply value identities outside the “norm.” I work from a humanist perspective, using empathy and kindness to recognize peoples’ strengths and support them in dealing with systemic societal oppression.
The core of my work addresses chronic trauma stemming from family of origin and a lifetime of social non-acceptance.
Additional thoughts
I am a Bay Area activist who has fought for the rights of transgender employees and worked to expand visibility of the trans community through public demonstrations.
I am a researcher who has studied the physical, psychological, and emotional aspects of sex, gender, and transition. I am a visual artist and storyteller who believes that underrepresented individuals expressing themselves creatively and authentically is powerful and important.

As a genderqueer trans person who has survived to adulthood, I have found that a meaningful goal in therapy is recognizing one's own journey and struggles in an empowering light.
Some strategies we can use to do this are:
- Learning to articulate and process trauma and internalized stigma.
- Identifying self-destructive and self-defeating thoughts and behavior.
- Facing the challenges of functioning powerfully, creatively, and with a sense of humor in a society that is not supportive of our authentic trans identities.
- Developing effective coping skills to deal with these challenges at work, school, and in relationships.
- Finding new, more empowering stories that paint us as heroes rather than victims.
